I watched Punch-Drunk Love a few nights ago and was pleasantly surprised. I wasn’t expecting to like it for some reason, but I loved it. It’s definitely one of my new favorites.

Dead Ringers. I’m not big on that weird ’80s stuff, and I really disliked Videodrome, the only other Cronenberg that I’d seen. I ended up loving it. So beautiful, creepy and haunting. I’m a twin, so maybe that helps.
BQ: Holy Mountain
I saw a swedish movie on Sundance the other day. It’s called “Evil” but the original title is “Ondskan.”
It was really good. Very upsetting at times. Sad. Depressing. These are all negative things, but if a movie stimulates any of my emotions, I consider it successful, considering I’m typically a ruthless *****.
A movie that fell short of my expectations:
Frontier(s)
I’m not even going to discuss how abnormally freakish this movie was. Go watch it for yourself. I think it’s on Fear.net.
Match Point. I’ve avoided Woody Allen for a while now (since Celebrity) but that one might get me back into the mix.
BA: I don’t get to the movies very often anymore, but pretty much everything falls short these days. I’ve been a real grump about movies for about the last 8 years or so. I don’t know why, everything makes me want to be like, “Dude, quit you’re crying” or I just get pissed when characters are so transparently strange. Like there’s no reason for this dude to be weird, you’ve just decided he has to be.
There really aren’t too many movies that exceed my expectations but there are plenty that fall short like “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince,” “The Ugly Truth,” “Paul Blart: Mall Cop.” “Friday the 13th remake,” “Fighting, “The Last House on the Left,” “Obsessed,” “The Haunting in Connecticut” ….I could go on but those are some movies that I though fell short of all the hype.
seconds (1966)
the girlfriend was all about it, but i was expecting to be completely bored, but it is amazing. a masterpiece of noir revival.
to list one that more people can relate to, pixar’s Up was really good and i wasnt expecting that much from it.
BQ: i’m not there – it was ok, but for as big a dylan fan as i am, i should have loved it.
@ Jimmy Jazz- does that mean you didnt see “sweet and lowdown”? you must. easily the best thing he has done post-manhattan.
Taken.
Not a huge action fan and everyone kept telling me it was BA so I thought for sure I’d hate it or think it’s big time overrated but I was blown away & thought it was awesome.
Oh man, Mama Mia was terrible. Not a musical fan but enjoyed Grease and even Chicago- heck I even sat through Dreamgirls in the theater. Love ABBA, fan of Meryl Streep & Colin Firth but found it so boring. My Mom told me to watch it cause she loves it so I sat through it, cringing the entire time.
Maybe it was just me!
Citizen Kane. My dad told me it was the most boring movie he’d over seen, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
BQ: Begotten. It supposedly “makes Eraserhead look like Ernest Saves Christmas.” No, it actually makes Eraserhead look even more brilliant than it already is, and proves that art for art’s sake is a bad thing.
Hi TL.
Punch Drunk Love is a good one. Powerful flick.
Oddly enough, mine is Sandler as well, Funny People. It should be noted that it came in right about where I thought it was going to initially, but I heard that no one was liking it and it lowered my expectations entering the theater. I thought it was great.
As for falling short. I guess I’ve been pretty lucky lately because I can’t really think of anything off hand. I’ll get back to you on that.
man on wire was surprisingly good. I thought it would be another boring documentary but found it to be quite interesting.
I was dissapointed by towelhead. It got great reviews but I had to shut it off halfway through. It was almost uncomfortable to watch and was extremely awkward.
the fountin was great, definatly surprising how great it was, but i saw that a long time ago. the last movies i was surprised about were “up” and “watchmen”, i actually saw quite a few really good ones this year,
He’s just not that into you.
so so so much truth in that movie. i really don’t like chick flicks, but that one was SO good. oh and memoirs of a geisha.
And to whoever put The Changeling, you are sick.
that is a sick sick movie.
Do you not understand that its about a man killing children?
really. sick.
The Silence of the Lambs exceeded them, and Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was pretty. . . . terrible, nothing like any of the fans were expecting, an epic let down.
I just watched “Appaloosa” recently and found it very interesting. Much different than what I was expecting from the typical western.
BQ – “I Am Legend” was just ok for me. The hype was much bigger than the movie itself.
17 Again.
I’m not a Zac Efron fan and expected it to be a crappy high school movie that tries too hard to be funny, but it was actually pretty good. I’d watch it again.
I thought The Bucket List was disappointing.
Well. It’s “Dream” by Kim Ki-Duk.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_(film…
Braveheart
The Fountain – being a guy and generally never liking ‘love-stories’…but this plot is one of the best ever… no other movie can make you contemplate for weeks like that one.
Taken and Transformers 2
BQ2: Harry Potter 6
District 9
and a movie that fell short “Frost/Nixon” kinda boring
Changeling
For the first time , I liked Angelina Jolie .
BA : Garfield
The Fountain
Let the Right One In. Tremendous movie.
Let the Right One In, thumbs up; Taken, thumbs down.
