Well, Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King and the ruler of Halloween is tired of celebrating Halloween year after year and wants something new. He takes a walk and stumbles upon a series of doors that lead to other holiday worlds. Finding the Christmas door most appealing, he the door and falls into Christmas Town. He loves everything that he is seeing and runs home to tell the citizens of Halloween Town what he discovered.
Jack comes to the conclusion that they will take over Christmas for the year instead of Halloween. Meanwhile, a rag doll named Sally, is in love with Jack and wants to help him anyway she can…until she gets a premonition that everything is going to go wrong. However, when Sally warns him, he won’t listen; being too excited about everything.
Jack hires three trick or treaters Lock, Shock, and Barrel to kidnap Santa Claus and bring him to Halloween Town. After the three bring him back to meet Jack, they take him to their boss, a burlap sack of bugs named Oogie Boogie, a gambling boogieman.
As the Christmas festivities get under way, Sally causes the sky to fog up hopefully stopping Jack’s plans. Luckily, Jack’s ghost dog, Zero has a nose bright enough to light the way (Rudolph homage). They take off and Jack delivers the gifts that the citizens had made. Little does Jack know, that the gifts aren’t what you would call “friendly”, but rather they attack the children and all the people of the world.
Meanwhile, Sally looks for Santa Claus to help Jack, but ends up being captured by Oogie Boogie as well.
The military shoots down the Santa imposter and hope is lost for the citizens of Halloween Town who are watching Jack’s journey in the witchs’ cauldron.
Jack awakens to realize that he was all wrong and decides to continue with Halloween. He suddenly realizes that he left Santa at Halloween Town and saves him and Sally after a long battle against Oogie Boogie.
Santa tells Jack never to do it again and assures that he can save Christmas in time. Jack soon sees how much Sally truely cares for him, but they are interupted when the Mayor and Lock, Shock, and Barrel take them back into town to celebrate Jack being alive.
As Santa flies away on his sleigh, he brings snow to Halloween Town.
Sally sneaks away to the now snow-covered grave yard where Jack finds her and they sing the final song of the film. The movie closes with a kiss and Zero flies away into the sky becoming a bright shining star.
