I’m trying to remember what movie this is…
The basic Idea is that prisoners are banished to some kind of Island or fenced off area. Once there, it’s total anarchy. So the main character is taken to this island, and at first he has to fight a group of barbarian types…but later on falls in with a more civilized group. From there I can’t really remember more about the plot, but I do recall an older character who makes mechanical things, like boats, within the good group.
Any idea what this movie is?

There have been many with that plot line, but it sounds like the one you’re thinking of is No Escape (1994) with Ray Liotta.
