I am thinking of a career change. I have worked in the movie industry as a production assistant, stand in, and extra as a hobby. I love the behind the scenes thing. I would like to get involved in casting extras. I am very organized so what other qualifications would I need to do this.

Processing your request, Please wait....

Now if you actually want to become a Casting Director:
Send a resume (office skills, etc) and letter to Casting Directors requesting work as a Casting Intern. You will not get paid, but it is a great way to learn. Here is a great place to start:http://www.castingsociety.com/
Just do the research and NEVER EVER listen to people who say “It’s to hard”, or “you can’t do it”, or who yell things at you like “If you don’t have connections it’s hard to get your foot in the door. Keep your mouth shut if you want to work in the industry.” This kind of advice is PURE IGNORANCE!
You can do anything you set your mind to. Use positive thinking. Do the research and footwork.
I have been in the Screen Actors Guild, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists for over 20 years, am on the SAG Equal Employment Opportunities Committee, and now work for a major studio in Film and Television Production Management. I deal with casting directors all the time.
If you want to become a Casting Director, Just go for it!

Since you want to work with extras, being organized and creative is the main thing. Having a background as a production assistant and other areas will definitely help. I suggest you check into what the union requires, then ask at the studios. Yes, you CAN make a reputation in this field. The woman who organized the extras for Lord of the Rings just has to mention that one job to get hired. No one has any doubt about her abilities.
