They can control how close things seem to come at your face. In the movie bolt there really wasn't to much of in your face scenes but you could tell it was in 3d. but im sure in my bloody valentine they do the in your face thing quite often. In those scenes even if you are towards the back of the theater things look like they are above the person one or two rows in front of you.
