According to several friends who are AST’s in the Coast Guard (Google “Mario Vittone” for one), with a few exceptions, it was very realistic.
    1. Bad – You get into a fight, you are kicked out of school. That Navy scene was a HUGE laugh-fest.
    2. Bad – You elbow an instructor, you are kicked out of school.
    3. Bad – There is a higher wash-out rate at the school. They TALKED about it, but most of the students that started the course were in it after most would have been washed out.
For the most part, everything else was pretty good. Of course, for Hollywood’s sake, they skipped over weeks of unit training and tedious preparation for rescues and stuck to nothing but rescue after rescue – but the AST’s I spoke to gave that a pass.
We all hated the CGI uniform on Kutcher in the last scene where he went to get his teacher-girl-friend, but that was technical.
The only other thing they didn’t like was that they had to be measured against Aston Kutcher for the rest of their careers… and that now all the kids in the world want to be AST’s…
