I was actually on the TV show Dawsons creek for a few episodes as a reocuring extra and got to see them up close and even talk to the guys about them.
Much like the guy before me said it comes down to film is different than video and also just the quality of the equipment. Look at your point and shoot cameras verses lets say even a canon 40d dslr. The sensor and everything else is just leaps and bounds better thus records a better immage.
Also they have the top in the industry processing the film. So it comes out even that much better. take your photos to walmart sometime get them developed then take them to a profesional lab and look at the difference in quality it will blow you away.
I use to live in Hawaii and did some underwater filming for some nature programs with sharks. I didnt know much about it but at that time I was one of the few that would climb in with no cage to film them. The camera they had me use cost 250k and that was years ago.

Video has a different "texture" than does film.
Professional video cameras start at about $15,000 without a lens. Cine Alta-Sony, Canon and Panasconic are some of the brands used professionally
35mm motion picture cameras can cost over $100,000 without lens. Arriflex is one such camera
It is for this reason that production companies rent the production equipment rather than own it.
Here is a link to one rental companyhttp://www.birnsandsawyer.com/cgibin/BIR…
