My friend and I were just watching the movie The Breed, and the trainers were able to teach the dogs to snarl on command with a hand gesture. We were just wondering if anyone knew how these trainers were able to train the dogs without hurting or intimidating them in any way.
How Do Animal Trainers For Movie Animals Teach Dogs To Snarl On Command?

My friend’s dog ‘smiles’ on command. He would show his teeth when he got excited, and every time he did it she said “smile!” and praised him. Now he ‘smiles’ whenever he sees someone he likes. His smile looks like a snarl, but it isn’t. I guess that is how the dog trainers do it, when the dog snarls on his own, they praise him, and put some kind of trigger word, or hand gesture to it.
If you put a treat above my dog’s nose, she will lift her lips up to try to get it, and it looks like a snarl, just because she is showing her teeth. They might do something like that too.
The dogs in the movies probably don’t make the noise with it, they have just been trained in some way to raise their lips, it isn’t actually a snarl. They add the noise to the film after they record it.
I think most of the dogs that live in private homes like our dogs do it and we pick up on it, whatever cute thing it is, and reward them for it.
One of my Maltese started giving out with the meanest growl I have ever heard and he looked like one of those little gremlin creatures when he did it. We just started putting our hand on his neck and tell him to “act like a gremlin” and this terrible noise comes out. He isn’t mad and all we do is touch him and tell him to do it. He doesn’t even get rewarded for it. He isn’t in pain. Now he will do it just to get attention. He knows everyone makes all over him when he does it.
They say hand gesture is the best way to train a dog. I taught mine in no time to stop barking by putting the palm of my hand in front of their face and saying “STOP”. Took about five times. Now I am training to stay with the hand gesture too.
Go on line and look up hand gestures. You will find some good information there.
Probably through cognitive conditioning. Conditioning teaches animals to repeat actions by giving them a reward for doing what they are asked. The dog will continue to do whatever you want as long as they are rewarded in some way
my golden does it on command. My little brother actually taught him. Im not sure how he did it but I think he touched his paw, made a growl noise and snarled also. It worked and is the cutest thing ever. He will do it over and over and loves it. After he does it we laugh and kiss him and he seems so excited.
