How Difficult Is It To Become A Professional Movie Extra?
Posted on: November 6, 20094 comments so far (is that a lot?)
I would like to get regular jobs as a movie extra…How difficult is it to get regular work, and could I make a living by doing that? I have only myself to support. Also, would I have to go to Hollywood if I wanted to be a full time movie extra?

Hollywood, Vancouver, NYC, you’d have to move to one of these places to be a regularly working extra, because they hire extras where they’re filming and that’s where most of the filming takes place.
If you want to do it to make a living, you’ll make much more money as a union member. That means you need to join SAG and to a lesser degree, AFTRA, though it seems like more TV shows are starting up that fall under AFTRA’s domain. Joining AFTRA is simple; just pay them $1300 with biannual dues of $63, unless you make a lot of money. SAG is more difficult. You can join SAG with three background waivers, you can get Taft-Hartley’d (not going to happen if you’re just an extra), or you can join after one year of membership in AFTRA with at least one principal role in that union. Initiation fees for SAG are around $2300.
