What made it controversial was not the faked 'death' scenes of the actors, but the deaths of several animals in the film, which really were killed as the cameras rolled. And um yeah animals were killed during this movie and people actually thought the cast was killed since it was in their contracts not to do any publicity for a year after the movie.
